Loopie Sling made with Dyneema

A Loopie is an adjustable loop sling.

These splicing instructions are intended for use with SupreemX-12™ made with Dyneema® fibre and other 12-strand ropes made with high-modulus fibres such as Vectran®, Technora® and Kevlar®. A Dyneema Loopie Sling requires a longer length of rope to be buried because of the extreme strength and slickness of Dyneema fibre.

A Brief Note on Rope Usage & Safety

Preparations

Rope and matching fid
Measuring tape
Marker
Tape
Scissors

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Stage 1 – Creating a Back Splice Handle

Make two marks, one at half a fid length and the second at a full fid length.

Make an entry mark “mark 1” at ½ a fid length (10.5 times the diameter of the rope) from the bitter end and an exit mark “mark 2” at a full fid length (21x the diameter) from the bitter end.
Insert the fid at the entry mark “mark 1”.
Run up the hollow middle of the rope the short distance to the exit mark “mark 2” and exit.
Push the fid through until you can attach the bitter end of the rope to the back of the fid.
Pull the fid and bitter end through.
Cut the tail.
Milk the rope to cover the cut end and complete the handle.

Create a new “exit mark” 2½ fid lengths (53x the diameter) away from the existing mark (“mark 2” from “Stage 1”). Attach the bitter end/other end of the rope to the fid.
Remove any twists in the rope. Enter the rope with the fid at the mark on the base of the handle (“mark 2” from “Stage 1”).
Carefully run the fid up the middle/hollow of the rope. Exit at the mark you created in “step 1” of this stage and be sure to exit inline with the handle (on the same side of the rope, as shown).
Remove the fid and pull out a length of rope to create the second back splice handle.

Stage 3 – The Second Back Splice Handle

The Loopie Sling is almost finished…

Make an “entry mark” at half a fid length (10.5x) from the bitter end and an “exit mark” at a full fid length (21x) from the bitter end.
Insert the fid at the “entry mark” and run up the hollow middle of the rope the short distance to the “exit mark” and exit.
Cut the tail and milk the rope towards the bitter end to complete the handle.

Here are the basic calculations for determining the rough cut length that you need to go along with these instructions.

For a Loopie using a rope made with Dyneema© fibre or any other high modulus fibre…

The Cut Length =
The maximum extended inside length of the finished Loopie based on your requirements X 2 )
+
Bury Length for a Dyneema, Vectran, Kevlar or Technora 12 strand rope = (Full Fid Length= Diameter of the rope X 21) x 2.5 X 2 )

2 full fid lengths
