Long Straight Bury Eye Splice

The Long Straight Bury Eye Splice is intended for Static-12, Static-12DS and other 12-strand single-braid/hollow-braid ropes made with olefin fibres, polyester, nylon or a combination of these fibres.

For ropes made with high-modulus fibres such as Dyneema (UHMPE), Vectran or Technora, use the Longer Bury Eye Splice instead.

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Make “mark 1” 2 full fid lengths (42 times the rope diameter) from the bitter end, make an additional mark at 1 fid length (21 times the diameter).
Form the desired eye and make “mark 2” opposite of “mark 1”.
Make “mark 3” 3 fid lengths (63x the diameter) from “mark 2”.
Place the bitter end of the rope in the fid.

Stage 2 – The Long Burial

Run the fid up the hollow middle of the rope, entering at “mark 2”.
Carefully exit the rope at “mark 3”.
Pull the rope out at “mark 3” until you see the mark you made at 1 fid length (21x the diameter) from the bitter end.

Stage 3 – The Long Taper

Remove the tape and mark the right and left strands every 4 picks, do this for three sets.
Cut and remove the strands you marked in the previous step.
Cut and remove the next three consecutive strands or strand pairs (as in the photo) towards the bitter end.
Taper the remaining strands at the bitter end of the rope by cutting them at an angle.
Make sure “mark 1” and “mark 2” are aligned and hold them with one hand and carefully milk/smooth the rope away from the eye with the other hand.
With the tapered tail pulled into the rope, the splice is complete and it is ready for stitching.

Note: A lock-stitch is necessary with this splice. The nylon stitch keeps the spliced eye intact by holding the buried portion of rope in place during zero-load conditions.

Stage 4 – The ABL Lock Stitch

With “mark 1” in-line with “mark 2” (as pictured), Hold the rope firmly to keep the eye from working out before you have a lock stitch in place.
The ABL lock stitch starts by threading the needle through the crotch of the eye. As you make the stitches, try to avoid threading the nylon twine through the centre of the strands, instead, weave between them as much as possible.
Thread the needle back and forth through the centre of the rope every 2 picks until at least 3 stitches have been made.
When you have the length of stitch you desire (at least three), start stitching back through the rope the way you came and exit within the crotch of the eye. Tie the two ends of the nylon thread together with a secure knot and trim the excess thread to finish the splice.
The finished product, in our example we have doubled the amount of the lock-stitching for aesthetic purposes.
