Longer Straight Bury Eye Splice

The longer bury eye splice is intended for SupreemX-12 and other 12-strand single-braid/hollow-braid ropes made with high-modulus fibres such as Dyneema (UHMPE), Vectran or Technora.

For 12-strand ropes made with olefin fibres, polyester, nylon or any combination of these fibres, the Long Bury Eye Splice could be used instead.

A Brief Note on Rope Usage & Safety

Preparations

Rope and matching fid
Measuring tape
Marker

Large Needle and Nylon Twine
Wear-pad (optional)
Suitable Hook/Hardware (optional)

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Make a “taper mark” at 1 fid length (21 times the diameter) from the bitter end.
Make “mark 1” 3 full fid lengths (63 times the diameter) from the bitter end.
Form the desired eye (add the optional hardware and wear-pad at this time) and make “mark 2” opposite of “mark 1”.
Make an “exit mark” 4 fid lengths (84x the diameter) from “mark 2”.

Stage 2 – The Longer Burial

Run the fid up the hollow middle of the rope, entering at “mark 2”.
Carefully exit the rope at your “exit mark”.
Pull the rope out until you see the “taper mark” you made at 1 fid length (21x) from the bitter end.

Remove the tape and mark the right and left strands every 4 picks, do this for three sets (as pictured).
Cut and remove the strands you marked in the previous step.
Cut and remove the next three consecutive strands towards the bitter end.
Taper the remaining strands at the bitter end of the rope (cut at an angle).

Stage 4 – The ABL Lock Stitch

You are almost finished…

Carefully milk/smooth the rope away from the eye, this will cause the tapered tail to slip back into the rope. Look for “mark 1” as you milk the rope (see the next step).
Stop once “mark 1” is in-line with “mark 2” (as pictured). Continue to hold the rope as necessary to keep the eye from pulling out before you have a lock stitch in place.
The ABL lock stitch starts by threading the needle through the crotch of the eye. As you make the stitches, try to avoid threading the nylon twine through the centre of the strands, instead, weave between them as much as possible.
Thread the needle back and forth through the centre of the rope every 2 picks until 3 stitches have been made on both sides of the rope. On the last set of three, start stitching back through the way you came and then exit within the crotch of the eye. Tie the two ends of the nylon thread together with a secure knot and trim the excess thread to finish the splice.

Note: A lock-stitch is necessary with this splice. The nylon stitch keeps the spliced eye intact by holding the buried portion of rope in place during zero-load conditions.
