Longer End-to-End Splice

The Longer End-to-End splice (a straight bury splice) is intended for SupreemX-12, Vectro-12 and other 12 strand single/hollow braid ropes made with high modulus fibres like Dyneema.

A Brief Note on Rope Usage & Safety

Preparations

Items required for this splice include…

2 matching ropes and an appropriate fid
Measuring tape
Marker
Tape
Scissors
Large sewing needle and nylon twine

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Stage 1 – Measurements & Marking

Place one end of each rope to be joined beside each other.
Make a “taper mark” at 1 fid length (21 times the diameter of the rope) from the bitter end on both ropes.
Make a “crossover mark” 3½ fid lengths (74 times the diameter) from the bitter end of each rope.
And finally, make an “exit mark” 7½ fid lengths (158 times the diameter) from the bitter end or 4 fid lengths (84 times the diameter) from the “crossover mark” of each rope.

Stage 2 – The First Burial

Attach the bitter end of one of the ropes to a fid.
Enter the opposite rope at the “crossover mark”.
Run the fid up the hollow of the rope.
Exit at the “exit mark”.
Pull out 1 fid length of rope and remove the fid (look for the “taper mark”).

Stage 3 – The Tapering

Remove the tape and mark the right and left strands every 4 picks, do this for three sets (as pictured).
Cut and remove the strands you marked in the previous step and mark the next three consecutive strands towards the bitter end.
Cut remove the three consecutive strands and taper the remaining strands at the bitter end of the rope.
Carefully run a small fid through the tapered rope tail to keep the it from slipping back into the rope.

Stage 4 – The Second Burial – Setting the Crossover

Place other end of the other rope into the fid and enter at the “crossover mark”.
Run the fid carefully up the hollow of the the rope and exit at the “exit mark”.
Remove the fid and set the crossover by holding the rope end and bunching the rope back towards the “crossover mark”.
Grab the other tail and again bunch the rope towards the “crossover mark”.

Stage 5 – The Final Tapering

Mark the right and left strands every 4 picks, do this for three sets (as shown).
Cut and remove the strands you marked in the previous step and mark the next three consecutive strands towards the bitter end.
Cut remove the three consecutive strands marked in the previous step and then taper the remaining strands at the bitter end of the rope.

Remove the small fid securing the tail of the other rope.

Stage 5 – The Disappearing Acts

Keep a firm grasp on the crossover point throughout this stage to keep the splice from slipping out.
Firmly hold the crossover point, milk/smooth the rope away from the crossover point on one side and then the other. Notice on the orange rope, the red tail has now disappeared.
Now, hold the crossover point and smooth the other side.
Both tapered tails have disappeared and the end-to-end splice is ready to be lock-stitched.

Note: A lock-stitch is necessary with this splice. The nylon stitching keeps the spliced eye intact by holding the buried portion of the two ropes in place during zero-load conditions.

Stage 5 – The ABL Lock-stitch

The ABL lock stitch starts by threading the needle through the centre of the rope 6 picks away from the “crossover mark”. As you make the stitches, try to avoid threading the nylon twine through the centre of the strands, instead, weave between them as much as possible (see step 4).
Thread the needle back and forth through the centre of the rope every 2 picks until 3 stitches have been made on each side of the of the crossover point.

This is a closeup of the 2 pick spacing.
Stitch back through the way you came with the new stitches closing the gaps. Tie the two ends of the nylon thread together with a secure knot and trim the excess thread to finish the lock-stitch. Or, alternatively you can cut and singe the ends of the nylon thread.
