Whoopie Sling

Whoopie slings are adjustable slings constructed with a non-adjustable eye at one end and an adjustable loop/eye at the opposite end. This splice is intended for Static-12, Static-12DS and other suitable 12-strand ropes made with polyester, nylon, polyolefins or any combination of these fibres.

Use the instructions for Whoopie Sling with Dyneema if you are using our SupreemX-12 (UHMPE) rope or any other rope made with high modulus fibres.

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Stage 1 – Measurements & Marking

Making The Static Eye (Brummel)

Make a “taper mark” ½ a fid length (10.5 times the diameter of the rope) from the bitter end and then make “mark 1” 1¼ fid lengths (26 times the diameter) from the bitter end.
Form the desired eye and make “mark 2” opposite of “mark 1”.
Place the bitter end of the rope in the fid.
Pass the fid through the centre of the rope at “mark 2”.
Line up “mark 1” with “mark 2”.

Stage 2 – Forming the Brummel

With “mark 1” and “mark 2” lined up.
Make a mark on the short length at a distance of 1x the diameter of the rope away from the newly formed eye.
Attach a fid to the other/far end of the rope (the end with yellow tape in the photos) and pass it through the centre of the rope at the mark made in the previous step.
Continue pulling the rope through and remove any twists along the way.
Pull the crossovers together to set the Brummel.

Stage 3 – The Burial

Make a mark on the long length at a distance of rope at 1x the diameter of the rope away from the newly formed eye.
From the mark made in the previous step, create an “exit mark” at a distance of 1-1/3 fid lengths (28 times the diameter).
Place the bitter end of the rope in the fid and run it up the hollow of the rope.
Exit at the “exit mark” made in step 2. Note: This “exit mark” is used again in “Stage 5” as the exit point for the adjustable loop of the Whoopie sling.

Stage 4 – The Tapering

Pull the tail out ½ a fid length (10.5 times the diameter).
Cut and remove three sets of right and left strands, leaving one pick in between them.
With the strands from step 2 removed, cut and remove the next three consecutive strands towards the bitter end (as marked in the photo).
Taper the remaining strands at the bitter end of the rope (cut at an angle).
Carefully milk/smooth the rope away from the eye. The tapered tail will slip back into the rope.

Stage 5 – The Adjustable Eye

Make an “entry mark” 2 fid lengths away (42x the diameter) from the “exit mark” and place the bitter end of the rope in the fid.
Enter the rope at the “entry mark”.
Run the fid up the hollow of the rope to the “exit mark”.
Pull out a short length of rope and remove the fid.

Stage 6 – Back Splice Termination

Make “mark 1” ½ a fid length away (10.5 times the diameter) from the bitter end.
Make “mark 2” ¼ of a fid length (5 times the diameter) from “mark 1”. Alternatively, if you want a longer handle, make this mark at a ½ fid length.
Insert the fid into the rope at “mark 1” and run it up the hollow middle of the rope the short distance to “mark 2”. Position the fid so that the bitter end can be placed in the fid.
Start pulling the fid through.
Continue pulling the fid through until the bitter end is fully exposed and the back splice is tight.
Remove the fid.
Cut the bitter end off where it exits (as pictured). We prefer to make a straight cut as opposed to an
angled cut. Cutting the tail in this way should decrease the likelihood of the back splice termination being pulled back into the middle of the rope.
Milk the rope to hide the cut end and finish the back splice handle.
