Brummel Eye Splice with Dyneema – 1 End

This method of creating a Brummel Eye Splice is recommended for 12 strand single braid high modulus fibre ropes, namely our SupreemX-12 and Vectro-12 ropes. This variation of the Brummel Eye Splice is necessary when it is not possible to work with both ends of the rope to complete the splice.

If you can work with both ends of the rope being spliced, you may want to use the standard Brummel Eye Splice for high modulus fibres instead.

A Brief Note on Rope Usage & Safety

Preparations

Items required for this splice include

Rope and matching fid
Measuring tape
Marker
Tape
Scissors

Fids & Measurements

It is important to note that when we reference a “fid” or a number of “fid lengths” within these splicing instructions, we are referring to a “full fid length” which is calculated at 21 x the rope diameter. If you are using fids for your measurements, you must be sure to account for the type of fid you are using i.e. “half 10.5x, long 14x or full fids 21x”.

Stage 1 – Measurements & Marking

Make “mark 1” 2¼ fids from the bitter end (47 times the rope’s diameter). (1¼ fid lengths were used in the photos for photographic reasons)
Make “mark 2” 3x the diameter of the rope in distance from “mark 1” away from the bitter end.
From “mark 2”, shape or measure the eye and make “mark 3”.
From “mark 3”, make an “exit mark” 2-2/3 fid lengths or 56 times the diameter away.

Stage 2 – Going inside-out

Take the bitter end and pass it through the rope at “mark 2”.
Invert the rope by pulling the bitter end through entirely; stop pulling as soon as the loop disappears.
Again, take the bitter end, this time passing it through the rope at “mark 3”
Pull the bitter end through entirely and pull to invert the rope here; again, stop pulling as soon as the loop disappears.

Stage 3 – The Unravelling

Unroll “mark 2”, so that “mark 3” is pulled towards “mark 2”.
Pull “mark 3” through “mark 2”.
Now unroll “mark 3” and pull the short section through.
Bring marks 2 and 3 together to form the eye.
Once “mark 2” and “mark 3” have been pulled together, the eye should look similar to the photo.

Stage 4 – The Burial

You are almost finished…

Attach the tail to the fid, enter the rope at a distance of 1x the rope diameter
Run the fid up the hollow middle of the rope, exit at the “exit mark”.
Pull the rope out a ½ fid length (10.5x the diameter).

You are almost finished…

Remove the tape and cut 2 of the strands where the rope exits (as marked in the photo)
Move 2 picks closer to the bitter end and cut another 2 strands and repeat
Cut the remaining 6 strands at an angle
Holding the eye, milk the rope to bury the tapered end
